24 Sep DR PHILLIPS CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE FOR DOMINICA
Kingston, Jamaica, September 19, 2017: The President of the People’s National Party (PNP) and Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Peter Phillips has expressed his sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Commonwealth of Dominica for the loss of lives and the devastation of the country last night in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
Jamaica is painfully aware of the ravages a Category Five hurricane can bring to a small island state, consequently we deeply share in the pain of this disaster which has virtually wiped out the country’s infrastructure and loss of personal property. We are thinking, too, of our other sister countries who are still in the path of this extremely dangerous hurricane.
As expression of our solidarity, the PNP urges the government of Jamaica to offer immediate assistance to Dominica and the other territories affected either on its own or through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CEDEMA). The Opposition Leader said the situation is urgent and calls for immediate action to alleviate human suffering as well as the possibility of a breakdown of law and order.
Expressing thanks to the government for bringing home Jamaicans in other affected islands, Dr. Phillips is also urging consideration for the evacuation of Jamaican Nationals in Dominica, should it be required.
He said PNP stands ready to do all it can to mobilize assistance for those countries in the region that have been impacted by hurricanes.
