28 Jul NEW PNP COMMISSIONS MAKING GOOD PROGRESS IN DEVELOPING SOLUTIONS TO NATIONAL ISSUES
Chairman of the Land Ownership Commission Norman Minott and Chairman of the Youth, Innovation and the New Economy Commission, Gary Peart, both gave updates on the work of their Commissions to the National Executive Council meeting of the People’s National Party held at the University of the West Indies today.
The two Commissions were launched by Party President, Dr. Peter Phillips two months ago.
Both Mr. Minott and Mr. Peart say the commissions have had meetings with several stakeholders and they have been getting the kind of feedback that is helpful to formulating solutions.
Mr. Minott says the work being done will secure access to credit and security for close to a quarter of Jamaica’s population, who are squatters. He said“some solutions are beginning to emerge. We can give persons titles in a structured way.”
“No one has resisted us. They have seen the need for what we are going and this week we have meetings with various government agencies,” he says.
According to Mr. Minott, the Commission will be going to squatter settlements to talk with those living there to complete the formulation of the solutions. “Our solution would not be a top down one, all persons affected will be involved in the solution,” he says.
In the meanwhile, Mr. Peart says his Commission is encouraged by the feedback received from the consultations so far and willingness of those engaged to offer solutions to the issues of youth unemployment.
Both Commissions will present detailed reports to the Annual Conference of the Party to be held from September 14-17, 2017.
