11 Feb Cde Peter Phillips , Party President-Designate for the PNP
The People’s National Party advises that nominations for the post of President of the Party closed at 12 noon today in keeping with the established nominations procedure. At that time, only one person, Comrade Peter David Phillips, the Member of Parliament for East Central St Andrew, had been nominated for the position.
It is therefore expected that Dr. Phillips will be declared elected by acclamation, as the fifth President of the People’s National Party, at the Special Delegates Conference of the Party scheduled for March 26, 2017. Comrade Portia Simpson Miller remains President until then and will continue as Leader of the Opposition until April 2, 2017.
The Party’s Secretariat will now proceed to finalize arrangements for the Special Delegates Conference where the constitutional process of electing a new President will be completed. I am pleased that the Party has, in this exercise, maintained its very strong democratic foundation and principles and as General Secretary I would like to thank the Officers and the wider membership for their cooperation in making the process to date seamless and incident-free.
