PNP EXPECTS RIGHTS OF CITIZENS TO BE PROTECTED IN DECLARED ZONE

Kingston, Jamaica, September 1, 2017:The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) notes the declaration of Mount Salem and its environs in parish of St. James as the first special operations zone under the Zones of Special Operations (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill passed in the Parliament in July.

We expect, as the Act provides, that the rights of residents in this defined area of special operations will not be breached and that law-abiding citizens will be afforded free movements for the duration of the 60 days, in the first instance.

With schools to be opened in a few days, we would urge that special attention be given to the movement and safety of children and parents.

In the meantime, we urge all citizens to obey the instructions and cooperate fully with members of the security forces. We are also calling on the residents to provide the necessary information to the security forces to advance the fight against crime.

The PNP willbe monitoring all areas of special operations for abuseand to determine the effectiveness of the move, both from a security and social intervention stand point, which we will share as warranted with the public.

In addition, we have assembled a legal team to investigate any report of abuse made to our dedicated line (876)361-ZOSO or 361-9676. The phone line will be activated as of Monday, September 4.
