19 Oct PNP President meets with Women’s Movement
Kingston, Jamaica; October 19, 2016: The President of the People’s National Party (PNP), the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, today held special consultations with the PNP Women’s Movement.
The meeting was held as part of a series of special consultations by the President of the PNP, with critical stakeholders who are affiliated with the party.
Mrs. Simpson Miller informed the meeting that the Women’s Movement is extremely important to the PNP because the majority of its members and workers are women.
She further pointed out to the leadership of the Women’s Movement that the transformation of the PNP cannot happen without the strong involvement of the women.
The Women’s Movement and its leadership, led by the President, Miss Jennifer Edwards, raised some issues that are of concern. These include: participation of the Women’s Movement in the Party; relationship between the Party leadership and the Movement; the role of the Movement in national issues ;legislative and other matters affecting women in Jamaica.
The discussion was frank and sincere with the women expressing most concern about the lack of a stronger legislative framework to protect the women and girls of Jamaica.
They pointed out that they have reviewed some 42 pieces of legislation and have recommendations for amendments to them.
Mrs. Simpson Miller has instructed that the Women’s Movement meets with the Opposition Spokesman on Justice, Senator Mark Golding to have further discussions on this matter so that their recommendations can be included in the legislative agenda of Parliament.
The PNP President has indicated that she will be having frequent meetings with the Women’s Movement.
