28 Apr PROTECT OUR PENSIONERS, FENTON CALLS ON GOVT TO INCREASE PAYMENTS TO RETIREES
Opposition Spokesman of Social Security, Dr. Fenton Ferguson said that he is disappointed that the Government has not given pensioners an increase in light of the significant rise in basic costs of living.
Dr. Ferguson said that the increase in taxation has translated to higher cost in transportation, medical treatment and pharmaceuticals; and given the overall movement on living expenses, pensioners should have been afforded an automatic increase.
“Too many of our seniors are experiencing the erosion of their purchasing power due to increases in taxes and fees, and are left to fend for themselves.
He said the government should immediately put on the table an adjustment to pensioners to cushion the effects of the taxation it has implemented to satisfy its ill-conceived $1.5m tax threshold give-away plan, which has so far caused them to raise over $30B in revenues.
Dr. Ferguson said the hardship that Jamaicans are facing, especially those who have toiled to build the nation and should be enjoying their twilight years, is incompatible with the rhetoric from the government about showing compassion to seniors. “I urge the government to do everything in its power to cushion the negative impact of the cost of living, and reduce the incidence of poverty on the aged, the disabled, and other vulnerable groups”, Dr. Ferguson urged.
