Opposition Spokesperson on Energy and Climate Change Calls for Urgent Action on JPS Billing Issues

Kingston, Jamaica. August 19, 2024: Phillip Paulwell, Opposition Spokesperson on Energy and Climate Change, has urgently called on the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) to instruct the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to withdraw all recently issued bills. This request follows alarming increases in bills over the past month, raising concerns about the integrity of the JPS billing system.

“Given the tremendous hardship faced by consumers, particularly following Hurricane Beryl, it is clear that something has gone fundamentally wrong with the JPS billing process,” Paulwell stated. “With many households experiencing long periods of non-usage of electricity, these exorbitant charges are not only unwarranted but also unacceptable.”

Paulwell also expressed concern over reports that JPS may have approached the government regarding these excessive bills. “It is essential that the government be transparent with the public. We need clarification on whether JPS requested concessions and what actions, if any, the government plans to take to alleviate this burden on the people,” he added.

There is speculation that JPS has sought government intervention to secure a reduction of the Specific Consumption Tax (SCT) for this month and to eliminate the General Consumption Tax (GCT) during this critical period. The Opposition demands answers to ensure billing anomalies do not unfairly impact consumers.

Additionally, Paulwell noted, “In my examination of bills, I have observed increases in fuel charges, independent private power charges, and the depreciation of the exchange rate. The country deserves explanations for these.”

“This is a time for accountability and action. The people of Jamaica deserve to know how their government and utility providers are addressing these pressing issues,” Paulwell concluded.
