Statement from Dr Dayton Campbell, General Secretary of the People’s National Party, on the Passing of Errol “Jigs” Ennis
Kingston, Jamaica. April 11, 2025: The People’s National Party mourns the passing of a dedicated son of Jamaica and committed servant of the people, Errol “Jigs” Ennis, former Member of Parliament for West Portland and former Minister of State in both the Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Ministry of Agriculture.
Errol Ennis was the embodiment of quiet strength, principle, and unwavering dedication to public service. He served four consecutive terms as Member of Parliament for West Portland—a remarkable achievement in a constituency that had been considered a stronghold of the Jamaica Labour Party, having voted JLP in all general elections from Universal Adult Suffrage up to 1972. His ability to earn the trust of the people and retain their support is a testament to his deep connection to the community and his commitment to service.
His time in Parliament, particularly under the leadership of P.J. Patterson was marked by a sincere focus on improving the lives of ordinary Jamaicans, especially in rural communities like those in Portland which he so proudly represented. Whether in matters of finance or agriculture, former Minister of State Ennis approached each task with humility, clarity, and a genuine desire to make a difference.
A lifelong supporter and stalwart of the People’s National Party, “Jigs” Ennis brought both intellect and integrity to the movement. His deep involvement in the democratic process, his mentorship of young comrades, and his respect for institutions and good governance have left an indelible mark on our Party’s history and ethos. He was also a man of culture, known for his deep love of music—a passion that reflected the rhythm and soul with which he engaged life, people, and politics.
We extend heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the wider Portland community. Jamaica has lost a faithful public servant, and the PNP has lost a treasured comrade.
May his soul rest in eternal power.
