Tribute from the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Spokesperson on Culture and the Creative Industries on the Passing of Junior Byles
Kingston, Jamaica. May 16, 2025: The People’s National Party mourns the passing of one of Jamaica’s most distinctive and soul-stirring voices, Junior Byles. Known for his powerful lyrics and heartfelt delivery, Byles was not merely a singer, he was a messenger of truth, a voice for the voiceless, and a steadfast contributor to the cultural heartbeat of our nation.
From his early days with the group The Versatiles, to his groundbreaking solo career with songs such as Fade Away, Beat Down Babylon, and Curly Locks, Junior Byles embodied the spirit of resistance, introspection, and social consciousness that reggae music was born to express. His collaborations with the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry resulted in some of the most enduring and emotionally charged recordings in our musical history.
Junior Byles was more than an entertainer. He was a griot — singing the lived experiences of the Jamaican people, challenging injustice, and calling for healing and unity through his music. Though he faced personal trials with courage and dignity, his contributions never faded; his voice remained a beacon for generations seeking truth in melody.
As we reflect on his life and legacy, we honour the indelible mark he has left on Jamaica’s cultural tapestry. We urge the nation to remember Junior Byles not only for his musical genius but for the soul he poured into every lyric and every note.
On behalf of the People’s National Party, I extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the broader artistic community. May his spirit rest in eternal peace, and may his music continue to inspire a people’s consciousness for generations to come.
Rest well, Junior Byles. You will never fade away
