tatement from Shadow Minister for Tourism Senator Janice Allen for Tourism Week 2024
Montego Bay, Jamaica. September 23, 2024: In recognition of Tourism Week 2024, observed under the theme, “Tourism and Peace: Out of Many, One Love”, Senator Janice Allen, Shadow Minister for Tourism, has called for a more inclusive and sustainable approach to Jamaica’s tourism sector,
Senator Allen emphasised that the benefits of tourism must be more evenly distributed across society, especially for the workers who drive the industry’s success. “While we celebrate the industry’s growth and development, we must ask ourselves if the prosperity of the tourism sector is truly reaching every Jamaican,” Allen said. “The success of tourism must be reflected directly in the lives of those who power the industry — from hotel staff to craft vendors and tour guides. It must also improve the communities that can contribute to its success.”
The Shadow Minister stressed the need for better wages and benefits, improved working conditions, and more opportunities for career development in the tourism sector, calling the workers the “backbone of the industry.”
A Call for Sustainable Development
Senator Allen also highlighted the need for sustainable tourism practices, particularly in light of climate change. She urged the government and industry stakeholders to protect Jamaica’s natural resources — including beaches, rivers, and coral reefs — which are part of the country’s appeal. “That’s why it’s so important that we celebrate Tourism Week under the theme ‘Tourism and Peace: Out of Many, One Love.’ We accept that Peace and Love can only be achieved, when all the stakeholders (The Many) have an obvious share in the results forthcoming.
“True peace in tourism means sustainable development that respects both our environment and our people, ensuring that future generations can benefit from Jamaica’s natural beauty,” she said.
Tourism as a Tool for Unity and Peace
Senator Allen linked the tourism industry to peace and unity, calling for tourism policies that foster fairness, justice, and opportunity for all Jamaicans.
“Tourism has the potential to make a greater contribution to Jamaica, and still reflect fairness and inclusivity. Let us use this week to reshape the industry in a way that benefits every Jamaican,” she said.
In conclusion, Senator Allen urged for a commitment to, and action towards fostering, during Tourism Week 2024, a tourism model that serves all Jamaicans and safeguards Jamaica’s future.
