Opposition Spokesperson Richard Azan Calls for Immediate Payment to NWA Contractors
Kingston, Jamaica, September 30, 2024: Richard Azan, the Opposition Spokesperson on Road and Works, has voiced serious concerns regarding reports that contractors working with the National Works Agency (NWA) are facing long delays in payment, with some waiting over a year for their dues.
“These contractors have fulfilled their commitments, yet they find themselves in a frustrating limbo, deprived of their rightful payments and any communication from the authorities. It’s simply unacceptable for them to be left waiting for such an extended period,” Azan stated.
He highlighted that this lack of payment is causing many contractors to refuse to take on future projects with the NWA, which will only worsen the already stalled infrastructure developments across the nation.
Azan is urging the government and the NWA to immediately clarify the status of these payments and to present a concrete plan for resolving the issue. He stressed the vital role of timely payments in ensuring the sustainability of the construction industry and the successful delivery of essential national infrastructure projects.
“The government must take decisive action now to rebuild trust and ensure that those who build and maintain our country’s roads and infrastructure are treated with the fairness they deserve,” he added.
