PNP Calls on PM Holness to Condemn Warmington’s Media Attacks and Reaffirm Press Freedom

Kingston, Jamaica, October 15, 2024: The People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to take immediate action against the dangerous and escalating attacks on the media by his party member, Everald Warmington. During a recent speech at the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Area Council Two conference, Mr. Warmington once again targeted the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, vowing to intensify his campaign despite mounting criticism. This inflammatory rhetoric threatens the safety of journalists and undermines Jamaica’s democratic values.

Mr. Warmington has a history of abusive behavior towards the media, including making obscene gestures, using expletives, and disrespecting journalists during interviews. Yet, Prime Minister Holness has not held him accountable. This lack of action raises serious concerns about the Prime Minister’s commitment to press freedom.

While Prime Minister Holness has publicly supported press freedom, his failure to condemn Mr. Warmington’s behavior is deeply concerning. Warmington’s claims to secure a third JLP term “by any means necessary” reflect an alarming departure from responsible political discourse. His personal attacks on journalists cross a line, endangering press safety and integrity.

In contrast, the PNP continues to address concerns about media bias through professional channels, engaging directly with media owners, editors, and the Media Association Jamaica (MAJ). The PNP has demonstrated its commitment to professionalism, seeking resolution through respectful dialogue before addressing issues publicly.

Notably, Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon, at a post-cabinet briefing last week, underscored the importance of not attacking the media, stating, “Even if it’s a hard question, they are doing their job.” However, despite her comments, no condemnation of Mr. Warmington’s actions have been issued, leaving a glaring inconsistency.

The PNP urges the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) and the MAJ to foster a national dialogue promoting respect between political actors and the media. The PNP remains committed to supporting press freedom and upholding democratic values.
