Senate Approves Senator Dr Floyd Morris’ Long-Awaited Motion for Legislation to Protect Senior Citizens

Kingston, Jamaica. October 28, 2024: On Friday, October 25, 2024, a motion championed by Senator Dr. Floyd Morris was approved in the Senate to initiate legislative protections for Jamaica’s senior citizens. The matter has now been referred to a Special Select Committee, which will deliberate on the scope and details of this crucial legislation and prepare a report for Senate consideration before it proceeds to Cabinet.

“This is a significant development,” said Senator Morris. “Our senior citizens, numbering over 350,000 and comprising 13.2% of our population, represent a vital part of our society. They are also our largest voting block. The approval of this motion signals to our senior citizens that the People’s National Party (PNP) is fighting for their interests and is committed to enacting measures that ensure their safety, dignity, and protection.”

The motion, originally tabled in 2021 when Senator Morris served as the Spokesperson on Labour and Social Security, has long been endorsed by PNP Leader Mark Golding. Seven members from the Opposition spoke in support of the motion, underscoring the importance of the proposed legislation to safeguard seniors’ well-being.

Reflecting on the journey of the motion, Senator Morris remarked, “The debate began in 2022 and has finally been concluded. Despite efforts to halt the motion, I was steadfast in seeing it through because of its importance to the rights and protection of our senior citizens. They have dedicated so much to Jamaica, and it is only fitting that we prioritise their security and well-being.”

With this progress, the PNP is committed to ensuring that Jamaica’s seniors are protected, valued, and given the respect they deserve.
