Further Flooding Crisis Looms: Ian Hayles Demands Urgent Drain Cleaning in Western Westmoreland
Westmoreland, Jamaica. November 13, 2024: Ian Hayles, MP Candidate for Western Westmoreland, is calling for immediate action to address the dire need for drain cleaning across several areas in Western Westmoreland, which continue to experience devastating flooding. With heavy rains forecasted in the coming days, Hayles is urging the responsible authorities, including the sitting MP, Moreland Wilson, Councillors Ian Myles and Garfield James, and Minister of Works and Local Government Desmond McKenzie, to act swiftly to prevent yet another disaster in the region.
“Western Westmoreland must be prepared for the rains ahead,” said Hayles in a video message. “We’ve seen repeated flooding in areas like McNeil Land, Egypt Gardens, Station Road, Retreat, Parish Well next to the Texaco gas station, Duck Pond in Mount Airy, and along Norman Manley Boulevard, particularly near the Treehouse Hotel. The drains in these areas remain blocked, and if not addressed urgently, we will face significant damage to property, vehicles, and potentially lives.”
Hayles boldly stated the lack of action by the current representatives who have access to state funds to address these recurring issues. “While I am only a caretaker and do not have government resources, I am here to call out, hollow out, and bawl out on behalf of the people,” Hayles boldly stated. “The JLP representatives, who are entrusted with state resources, must act now. Clean the drains before the rains come — not after the floodwaters have wreaked havoc.”
Hayles also called on Minister Desmond McKenzie to intervene, stating that the government must prioritise the safety and welfare of residents in the affected areas. “Minister McKenzie, this is a matter of urgency. The government cannot continue to neglect these communities.”
In addition to the urgent plea to the government representatives, Hayles commended the People’s National Party councillors in Western Westmoreland for their proactive approach during the recent tropical storm and encouraged citizens to prepare themselves for the impending rains.
“I call on the people of Western Westmoreland to get ready for the rains. Do your part to protect your families and property, and I will ensure that our PNP councillors do theirs,” Hayles added. “Let us prepare the ark of Western Westmoreland together and demand accountability from those responsible for ensuring our safety.”
The areas in need of immediate attention include:
-
McNeil Land drains
-
Egypt Gardens drain
-
Station Road drains
-
Retreat drains
-
Parish Well next to Texaco in Negril
-
Duck Pond in Mount Airy
-
Norman Manley Boulevard (Treehouse area)
-
Bath House in the Sheffield Division
Hayles urged residents to share his message widely to hold the government accountable for protecting the community from the devastating effects of flooding. “This is not about politics; this is about the safety of lives, properties, and our community. Let’s demand action now.”
