Shadow Minister Haughton Demands Immediate Action on Non-Functional Jamaica Eye Cameras
Kingston Jamaica. December 20, 2024: Dr. Andre Haughton, Shadow Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship, is calling for urgent government intervention following revelations from the Minister of National Security that a significant number of surveillance cameras in the Jamaica Eye System are non-functional. With the Christmas season, a time when crime traditionally spikes, upon us, this failure poses a serious threat to public safety.
“The non-functioning cameras represent a national security crisis. These devices are critical for monitoring and responding to criminal activity. The Government must explain how we reached this dangerous juncture and take immediate corrective action,” Dr. Haughton stated.
He is urging the Government to take the following actions:
1. Conduct an Emergency Audit: Assess the operational status of all Jamaica Eye cameras.
2. Implement Immediate Repairs: Launch an emergency maintenance programme to restore functionality.
3. Engage Technology Experts: Partner with local tech companies to ensure sustainable system improvements.
“Our people deserve a safe and secure environment, particularly during the holiday season. Technology must be leveraged effectively in the fight against crime,” Dr. Haughton emphasised.
