Danishka Williams Demands Immediate Action and Accountability Over Dangerous Bridge Collapse in Douglas Castle
St Ann, Jamaica. May 15, 2025: Residents of Douglas Castle remain in distress as a critical bridge in their community continues to be in a state of disrepair months after the issue was raised. The hole created by the breakaway of the bridge poses a serious threat to the lives and safety of residents, including children, the elderly, and drivers. Despite calls for updates, there has been no word from the sitting Member of Parliament or the Ministry of Works regarding a timeline for repairs or even interim safety measures.
The issue was first brought to national attention in February 2025, when Danishka Williams, the People’s National Party’s Member of Parliament Caretaker toured the area and documented the deteriorating condition of the bridge in a video. Since then, there has been no communication, no site visits by relevant authorities, and most disturbingly, no action.
“I toured the area in February and saw the danger this broken bridge posed to the people of Douglas Castle. I documented it on video and publicly asked for an update. We are now in May, three months later, and nothing has changed. This is a clear indication that the Member of Parliament and this government is not serious about the safety and the business of the Jamaican citizens,” said Williams.
Local residents have complained about incidents of individuals falling into the gap where the bridge once stood, further emphasizing the urgency of the matter. Their frustration continues to mount as they feel neglected, ignored, and left at risk.
This situation is not just about a bridge, it’s about basic infrastructure, public safety, and accountability. Citizens deserve clear, timely, and transparent communication from their elected officials, especially when it involves the safety and daily wellbeing of their communities.
We are now calling on The Member of Parliament for the area to immediately provide a public update on the status of the bridge, a timeline for repair, and the emergency measures that will be taken to ensure no more lives are endangered.
It is time we demand a system of accountability for our Members of Parliament where clear, concise communication is standard and not a luxury, and where the needs of citizens are prioritized over political convenience. The people of Douglas Castle deserve better. All Jamaicans do.
