14 Aug CLARITY NEEDED ON PROPOSED COAL PLANT
Kingston, August 9, 2016:
Spokesman for Water and Climate Change Ian Hayles, is calling on Prime Minister Holness to provide ‘clarity’ regarding conflicting statements in the public domain by Ministers Henry and Wheatley about a ‘proposed’ Coal Plant at Nain, St. Elizabeth.
The Member of Parliament for Western Hanover Hayles said, “While the need for development, jobs and adequate energy is appreciated and understood the nature of the development that will provide those jobs and additional energy must be in keeping with Jamaica’s Environmental Security objectives.”
The facts support themselves. Jamaica is a Small Island Development State with limited land resources, Coastal Zones and related ecosystems with high biodiversity. The need for additional jobs, development and energy is equally obvious.
Therefore the Administration must assure the public that the options it will pursue on the people’s behalf will not create any bio and environmental hazards from which our Environment, Natural History and Public Health cannot recover.
The PNP’s Region 6 Chairman concluded by saying, “If the assurances are not forthcoming, questions will be put to the portfolio Minister (the Prime Minister himself) upon the resumption of Parliamentary Sittings in September.”
