19 May PNP CALLS FOR URGENT DRAIN CLEANING EXERCISE TO HELP CLARENDON RESIDENTS
The People’s National Party is calling on Government to urgently release resources to flood-affected communities in Clarendon for drain cleaning and critical restorative work.
Once again, several communities, particularly those in the southern belt of the parish, are facing the untenable ravages of flooding from heavy rains.
Despite the much announced drain cleaning programmes in the parish, many drains remained blocked and contributed to the flooding, affecting hundreds of residents, livestock, and in many instances, properties have washed away in the fast moving torrent.
Sagicor which has a development in the area most affected, reported that a drain cleaning exercise undertaken by company in January of this year around its property, discovered that no work had been done on the drains in recent years.
Member of Parliament for the area, Noel Arscott says the release of resources is urgent as this is the second time in recent weeks that the same residents are affected and left devastated by the flooding. It was only about three weeks ago that the government renewed its promise to clean drains but there has been no action to date.
He said with more rain expected this week, it is critical that help is made available to ease the serious impact of the flood waters in the parish.
