17 Sep PNP CALLS ON LABOUR MINISTER TO RESOLVE LEADERSHIP SQUABBLE AT NIF
Kingston, Jamaica, September 16, 2017: Opposition Spokesman on Labour & Social Security, Dr. Fenton Ferguson is calling on the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon Shahine Robinson to move swiftly to resolve the leadership squabble which has surfaced at National Insurance Fund (NIF), following internal movements of personnel.
Dr Fenton Ferguson said the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour & Social Security, Mrs Collette Roberts-Risden, should explain to the country the reasons for transferring the Chief Technical Director for Investment of the National Insurance Fund (NIF).
It is understood that the transfer has not been properly effected, causing unease and disquiet among the leadership of the NIF because the position to which the Chief Technical Director is being transferred is still occupied by another staffer. This bungling has created an untenable situation in the Ministry and the NIF is left without leadership.
Dr Ferguson said “I am deeply concerned that the NIF is too important a fund to be without stable leadership given its asset base of over Ninety-Five Billion Dollars ($95B); provide funding for the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) which takes care of the nation’s most vulnerable pensioners; is sensitively linked to its flagship investment the Melia Braco hotel that has its own evolving challenges”.
It is therefore against this background that the Opposition Spokesman is calling on the Minister of Labour & Social Security, Hon Shahine Robinson to move swiftly to convene a meeting with her Permanent Secretary and the board of the NIF to resolve the matter and prevent any further fall out at the Fund and in the ministry.
